Selected students and teachers attended the much awaited WordCamp Philippines last Oct. 2, 2010 at the College of St. Benilde in Taft Avenue. WordPress developer and Automatic founder, Matt Mullenweg attended the event along with other bloggers in the Philippines.

The day started with breakaway sessions. I attended the first session which was entitled “Plug-in Must Haves” by Mr. Hans Koch. Basically, the session was all about plug-ins that can be used in WP.

These are the Seven Steps for Optimization:

  1. Setup
  2. URLs and Navigation
  3. Meta Data Management
  4. Tracking, Link Management, and Broadcasting
  5. Backup and Security
  6. Speed
  7. Design

The second session i attended is all about Customizing WordPress Blogs with Themes and Plug-ins by Mr. Jonas Roque, the creator of Facebuko.com which he copied from the popular Facebook. He discussed how he created Facebuko.com using WordPress. He recommended some useful plug-ins like NextGen Gallery, WP- PageNavi, WP e-Commerce and cForms.

The Third Session i attended is entitled “WordPress.org VS WordPress.com” by Mr. Jonel Uy. Basically, he discussed the foundational definitions of WP.org and WP.com, the PROS and CONS of both sites.

WordPress based sites:

1. mashable.com – insights and latest news article

2. gizmodo.com – tech blog

3. Teaser-Trailers.com- movie trailers

4. www.gov.ph – RP official gazzette

5. www.BlimsFurniture.com.ph

6. NomNomClub.com – not free

7. Blogging from home by Janette Toral

After the breakaway session, we had the plenary session which started with the The talk of Mr. Rob Angeles on Social Media: Powered by WordPress. Next was all about Blogging Ethics by Mr Danny Arao and the last talk was by Ms. Aileen Apolo on Google University. The day ended with a Question and Answer by Mr. Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress and all the speakers.

T o sum it up – Learning WordPress is fun and cool! 😀

Word Cloud

Most of us are familiar with Wordle, a nice website that allows you to create word clouds from text. I discovered  a similar website called Tagxedo. This website is similar to Wordle, but lets you put the word cloud into different shapes. It can be saved as images for printing and sharing. Check out this cool site to see some really amazing examples of word cloud art!
